How to play Perceptle
perceptle.com does not publish a rules article. What follows is the behavior of the public client, read on 22 October 2026, plus one full run I played that day. The tagline on the game is “Five tiny tests of perceptual instinct. Two minutes. One score.” The five tests always run in the same order: Count, Track, Angle, Tempo, Split.
The five tests
| Test | What you see | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Count | About 45–85 dots for 2.0 seconds | Type the total and submit |
| Track | A ball on a curve, hidden after 2.0 seconds | Click the ground where it lands |
| Angle | A handle, target between 5° and 355° | Drag counterclockwise, release to lock |
| Tempo | Four beats between 75 and 130 BPM | Tap the canvas or Space for eight more |
| Split | A line and a fraction such as 5/11 | Drag a mark, release to lock |

How a score is made
Each test starts at 100 and falls on a bell curve: score = round(100 × exp(−0.5 × (error / σ)²)). The total is the rounded average of the five integers, not a count of “tests passed.” Grades are S at 95 or more, A at 85, B at 70, C at 55, D at 40, and F below 40. On a normal day the σ values are 0.20 relative for Count, 60 field units for Track, 8° for Angle, 60 ms for Tempo, and 0.05 of the line for Split.
When I finished #97 I treated a miss of one dot as almost free: one dot on a count of 49 is about 2% relative error, which the curve still scores at 99. A miss of five dots lands near 88. Tempo is stricter in feel because 60 ms of combined error is only about 61 points, and the public averages show Tempo as the weak test for most players.
Phone, sound, and saves
- The game is a canvas. Mouse, touch, and a keyboard Enter or Space are enough. There is no account.
- A local save uses the key perceptle:player for a random id. Clearing site data clears the streak.
- Tempo synthesizes a short tone. Bluetooth lag can move your taps. The practice page is not the official score.
- “Keep playing” after a run is a random practice round and is not recorded. The archive replay is the daily puzzle again.
How many tests are in Perceptle?
Five: Count, Track, Angle, Tempo, and Split. A page that deals ten tests is a different game.
How long is a game?
The site describes it as two minutes. You spend a few seconds on each of five events, so a careful run is about that long.
What is a good Perceptle score?
The letter cuts are fixed. Across 9–22 October 2026 the public average total was in the low 60s, so a 65 is ordinary. It is not a percentile, and the game only shows a “beats this many players” line after you submit.
